![]() ![]() Needless to say in typical RAH fashion, adventures ensue, so if one enjoys any RAH books then this should also be put on your list ![]() And in typical Heinlein fashion within the first few pages we are immersed in the belief that in no possible way could humans have evolved on Earth, only weird geeky anthropologists believe that, and even they can't agree. This book introduces us to the Fries family from Mars, and in particular the precocious daughter Podkayne. He certainly did have an amazing ability to develop a storyline and make the future setting seem unbelievably natural. ![]() This book is seen now as one of his YA novels, although in my opinion as an (early ha ha) middle aged man I still enjoyed both the characters and the story. I never did quite catch up with his prolific output as in my honest opinion his standard declined rapidly, and so I had (and still have) no desire to read some of his later novels. He was still merrily writing away as I grew up and started reading his early novels. RAH was one of the first authors that I read way back in the mid 70s in my early teens as I got into sci-fi in a big way (Wells, Asimov and Clarke were also amongst the first). ![]()

However what I can't forgive is that - given such a great seed for the story such a captivating style to describe food - how could the book remain so shallow, so unentertaining? It was like scratching the surface of something interesting in one moment and then after half a page giving up on it and jumping on the next character, next thought. Sometimes even too baroque if I might say, but that's something to forgive. Review 1: Oh, the food descriptions are mouthwatering and beautiful in this book. ![]() ![]() Confused yet? The movie depicts protagonist Robert Langdon as persona non grata at the Vatican due to The DaVinci Code caper, but in the book sequence it has not yet happened. Novelist Dan Brown wrote Angels & Demons three years prior to writing “The DaVinci Code.” So, although the book is a prequel, the 2009 movie version presents Angels & Demons as a sequel. The movie and book are more about the Roman Catholic Church (and Christianity in general) versus science. Interestingly, Angels & Demons has almost nothing to do with angels and demons! Except for some angel statues cryptically pointing out the next clue, the title of the movie and book is more metaphorical than substantial. ![]() Other Christians do not plan to view it but are wondering what religious questions people may ask who do see the movie. ![]() FORT WORTH, Texas (BP)–With the movie premier of “Angels & Demons,” some Christians are wondering whether to see it. ![]() ![]() Some nights I lie awake, thinking of this, and it makes me unspeakably sad. Some nights I can think of nothing else, and nothing more terrifying. The nature of the Universe is that everything inside it becomes lonelier and lonelier and lonelier. Celestial bodies floating in a black sea, carried by a current older than life. Expanding outward-pushing, pulling, as you told me. The paradox doesn’t account for the fact that the Universe, like all things, was born and has been growing ever since. The problem is the assumption that the Universe is static, unmoving that every star has always occupied the same space in our sky. ![]() By this logic, the night sky shouldn’t be dark at all it should be a blinding wash of starlight. ![]() ![]() By this logic, you could stand anywhere in this world and look up at the night sky and your line of sight would inevitably end on a star. We believe the Universe birthed an infinite number of stars. ![]() ![]() ![]() As I cannot condense, I must omit many strange passages in my history. Every day seems like a romance within itself, and the years grow into ponderous volumes. Hour after hour I sit while the scenes are being shifted and as I gaze upon the panorama of the past, I realize how crowded with incidents my life has been. The visions are so terribly distinct that I almost imagine them to be real. I am now on the shady side of forty, and as I sit alone in my room the brain is busy, and a rapidly moving panorama brings scene after scene before me, some pleasant and others sad and when I thus greet old familiar faces, I often find myself wondering if I am not living the past over again. ![]() My recollections of childhood are distinct, perhaps for the reason that many stirring incidents are associated with that period. My birthplace was Dinwiddie Court-House, in Virginia. I was born a slave-was the child of slave parents-therefore I came upon the earth free in God-like thought, but fettered in action. ![]() |
